❋ Keeping the "A" in STEAM, Educator's Cooperative Collective Conference, September 2023
Presented at the 2023 EdCo Collective Conference, this session was co-led with Carlton Adkins, the TAEA Middle School Art Teacher of the Year. This talk addressed the common misconception that art, math, and science are siloed disciplines. By utilizing the Understanding by Design (UbD) framework, we shared strategies for helping students integrate principles of design and emotional purpose into scientific examination and engineering solutions
❋ Dispelling the Notion of "Bad at Math and Science" - CURVE Homeschool Education Conference, July 2025
Drawing on current research into math anxiety and STEM identity, this presentation examined why 93% of U.S. adults experience math anxiety and how early educational experiences shape lifelong beliefs about ability. We challenged the common myth that success in science and math is a genetic trait rather than a developed skill. I explored the psychological "pipeline" of disengagement, from early math anxiety to the internalization of a "non-math person" identity, and shared evidence-based strategies to foster a growth mindset and improve student self-efficacy, specifically including how the roles of parents, cross-sector teachers, and mentors can radically impact scientific identity.

❋ Commencement Address, WEB Tutorial School, May 2025/May 2026
In this keynote address, I spoke to the graduating class of 2025 about navigating the "fog of what’s next." Drawing from my own non-linear journey, from geological research and environmental law to education and the arts, I encouraged graduates to embrace the "zigzag" of life. The speech emphasized the importance of community resilience, the "See a need, Meet a need" philosophy, and the value of maintaining deep interpersonal connections in an increasingly digital world.
❋ Simplifying Inclusive Instruction: Actionable Tools to Invite in All Learners
Co-presented with Natalie Vadas, special education instructor at Murrell School, this talk addressed the core challenges of classroom differentiation, including time constraints and resource gaps. The presentation equipped attendees with actionable tools for identifying learner diversity and creating "considerate classroom spaces" that address physical, cognitive, and emotional barriers to learning. By focusing on Universal Design for Learning (UDL), we demonstrated how to foster high-engagement environments where every student can thrive.
